Toxic sprays are not only ineffective at getting control of cockroaches, they can make you sick. These sprays are topical, so they don't get into the gaps and cracks where roaches hide. When cockroaches come in contact with them, they detect them and go around treated areas. If exposed, cockroach nymphs often survive. When they do, they shed their skins and create new skins that are even more tolerant to these chemicals. A cockroach that becomes resistant to the dangerous products you use to exterminate them can become a danger to you, as they can pick these chemicals up and deposit them in sensitive areas, such as in silverware drawers, pantries, and food cabinets.
Baits are a great way to address a cockroach infestation. Unfortunately, when bait is improperly deployed, it can result in bait aversion. Roaches learn what is safe to eat and what is not safe to eat. Some German cockroach populations have genetically altered their taste buds to reject cockroach baits because they have learned that this food source kills them. They're now born with bait aversion. 1. Remove Food Sources

While cockroaches can live in a home with very little to eat, they don't particularly like it, and it makes it much more difficult for roaches to grow a population in an environment that is food-deprived.

Clean your entire home. Cockroaches feed on many things, including dead skin cells, hair, paper, fabrics, grime, oil, rotting organic matter, and feces.
Properly manage your trash.
Properly manage dirty dishes.
Store food products that come in cardboard, paper, or thin plastic in sealed hard plastic containers.
Put pet food down only during the day. Roaches are nocturnal.

2. Remove Water Sources

While cockroaches can live in a home that is bone dry, they don't prefer it. Some cockroaches can easily be controlled by making your home too dry to live in. It's tricky but well worth the effort.

Fix plumbing issues, such as leaky faucets, garbage disposals, and pipes.
Vent the moisture when you take a shower or bath.
Install dehumidifiers in spaces where the humidity stays high.

3. Remove Access

While it is impossible to seal the exterior of your home enough to keep cockroaches out, offering fewer entry options can deter roaches from getting in. When this is done in conjunction with a removal of exterior attractants, roaches may stop getting inside.

Make sure your exterior doors have good seals all the way around. If door sweeps are missing, install them.
Replace damaged window and door screens or repair them.
Repair cracks in your foundation.
Use a caulking gun to seal every gap and crack you find.

4. Remove Attractants

While it is impossible to keep cockroaches from coming into your yard or exploring the exterior of your home, there are some things that promote activity. When you remove these, you reduce the chances that a cockroach will find its way into your home.

Move piles of dead branches, scrap wood, leaves, stones, and other organic debris away from the exterior of your home.
Address moisture issues, such as damaged gutters and dense landscaping.
