What Every Phoenix Property Owner Ought To Know About Termite Swarmers

In our Phoenix service area, termites are a serious threat to our homes and businesses. They get in and feed on wood for years. This can lead to serious damage that is difficult to fix. An obvious warning sign of a termite infestation is the appearance of winged termites. These can appear on the outside or inside of your Phoenix property. When they appear on the inside, they are a hard sign to miss. But, their appearance on the outside of property often passes without notice. Today, we're going to take a look at a few important facts you should know about termite swarmers in Phoenix.

What are termite swarmers?

swarm of termites

When a termite colony matures, it begins to develop male and female winged reproductives. These insects have a job to do. They leave the nest, find mates, and locate places to have lots and lots of babies. We hope they don't choose your property.

What do termite swarmers look like?

A termite swarmer is only ⅜ of an inch in length, but its long white wings make it noticeable. They are white and they stack on top of each other. This makes the wings a stretched-out teardrop shape.

Why are termite swarmers called swarmers?

When swarmers exit the nest to look for a mate, they gather into a swarm. This swarm doesn't travel far because each termite is busily attempting to decide who they want to spend the rest of their life with. Swarms are also short-lived. It takes less than 30 minutes for the mating process. After this, the swarmers shed their wings and tunnel into the ground or find a void in which to create a nest. It is important to note that they don't chew their way into wood to create a nest. Swarmers don't feed on wood. Only workers termites eat wood.

What should you look for if you don't see the swarmers?

The appearance of shed wings on the ground and on other surfaces can alert you to the threat. You may also find wings inside spider webs. Search underneath structures and in dark, damp areas around your home.

What does it mean when swarmers are in your home?

It can mean one of two things. If the swarmers are drywood termites, it simply means you have an infestation in the hardwood of your home. Drywood termites establish themselves in voids and in hardwood. If the swarmers are subterranean termites, it means you have a severe infestation. Subterranean termites tend to create ground nests. When swarmers exit a ground nest, they usually do it outside, unless the nest is very close, or underneath a home. A nest that is close to your home will allow subterranean termites to do more damage in a shorter amount of time.

What Should You Do About Swarmers?

When you see swarmers in your home, we hope that you don't do what some Phoenix residents have done. We hope you don't vacuum them up and consider the problem solved. Swarmers don't accidentally get into your home. They're not drawn to the dim interior of Phoenix homes. They would prefer to stay outside where it is brightly lit. That means that they're a definite warning sign of a mature and active infestation inside or very near your home.

When you see swarmers on the outside, it is possible that there is no nest in your yard or inside your home. But, the short flight distance of a termite swarm puts the nest close to your property, at the very least.

At the first sign of termite swarmers or the evidence of termite swarmers, it is essential to hire a licensed pest management professional to perform an inspection. Don't risk having your Phoenix home damaged by termites. They can feed on your property for years without providing any visible warning signs. Don't let the warning sign swarmers represent go unheeded.
