Four Common Myths About Denver Bed Bugs You May Still Believe

Bed bugs have been around for a while. Some experts believe that they have been living with us since the beginning of time. After all these centuries, you'd think we could have conquered our bed bug problem. But these insects aren't easy to figure out. Let's take a look at four common myths about bed bugs that you may still believe.

Myth: Bed Bugs Are Too Small To See

When bed bugs get into your Denver home, you might think they're impossible to see. Why? Because bed bugs are quite small and they hide in tight spaces. Consider these facts:

  • A newly hatched bed bug is only 1mm long. While certainly small, it's not too small to see.
  • A newly hatched bed bug is pale in color and transparent. This makes them even more difficult to see. But you can still see them.
  • An adult bed bug only grows to about 4.5 mm. These adult insects are easier to see, but stay hidden from view because they are sensitive to light and prefer to feed in the dark.
  • All bed bugs hide away in tight or compressed spaces during the day and when rooms are lit. While it is possible to lift a mattress and find bed bugs between the mattress and box spring, bed bugs may hide even better than this. They can be squeezed into the seams of your mattress and only be detectable if you drag something through the seam and bring them to the surface.

Myth: Bed Bugs Live Near Beds In Dirty Homes

This is sort of two myths rolled into one. There are many myths about where bed bugs live. The greatest of all myths is that bed bugs live outside. But they don't. Bed bugs live almost exclusively indoors and travel from one location to another by hitching rides. When they are carried to new locations, they do what they did in the last; they hide in tight, dark spaces, near where they can get a blood meal. In light of this, here are a few reasons why bed bugs don't only live near beds, and why they don't just live in dirty homes:

  • Bed bugs don't choose where they live. If they're not happy living with you, they aren't going to leave on their own.
  • Bed bugs aren't attracted to dirty homes any more than clean homes, but they make homes dirty by their presence. They leave black excrement and bloodstains on mattresses, box springs, fabrics, and upholstery. These stains can be hidden at first because they're likely to be in tight, hidden spaces.
  • Bed bugs are prone to living near or on beds. It is true that bed bugs do infest mattresses, but this is far from the only place you'll find these pests. These insects can get a blood meal from you when you're awake and may establish themselves near an office chair you sit in it a lot, inside the couch you lay on to watch television, and other areas of your home.

Myth: You Can Get Rid Of Bed Bugs On Your Own

This one isn't as much a myth as a misconception. If you go to the internet for advice, you'll find many who will give you a step-by-step guide for getting rid of bed bugs. Most of these aren't going to do much more than sap your energy, cost you money, and extend your suffering. Here are a few reasons why DIY bed bug methods fail:

  • It is difficult to exterminate every adult, nymph, and egg. Natural remedies usually have limited success because they don't address bed bugs in all stages of development.
  • Over-the-counter sprays are topical and don't get deep enough to eliminate all bed bugs.
  • Traps can catch some bed bugs, but won't catch them all.
  • Bed bugs can go a long time without food. If they sense danger, they can wait until the danger passes then reemerge.
