How Do You Get Bed Bugs?

Having a dirty home is not how you get bed bugs, contrary to popular belief. Bed bugs want to be in your space because they need your blood to live. They congregate on animal land and in public places because there's a constantly available food supply for them. Watch out when you’re at school or work, visiting a hotel, or traveling through a train station. These critters will find your personal bags and clothes and hang on. The next thing you know, they’ll be home with you and crawling in your:

  • Wallpaper

  • Flooring

  • Wood trim

  • Appliances

  • Electronics

  • Fabrics

  • Upholstery

  • Couches

  • Mattresses

An infestation will not take long to develop. You’ll start to have body bites, see stains, and smell odors. The bites will likely be on your face, neck, arms, and legs; bumpy, patchy, and collected together, they might remind you of a rash. Blood and reddish-brown marks will appear on fabrics and surfaces. So will brown or black ones with a powdery consistency; these are fecal grains, so be cautious. A musty stench will fill your rooms.

Your everyday bed bug is a tiny reddish-brown insect with round parts. The head is dainty with two antennas on top. The tail section is considerably larger, and a middle section that has an unrecognizable form connects everything together. Six legs help these annoying pests that are 1/4 of an inch long get around. They lay pearly white eggs to hatch their translucent young.

What Are Ways to Prevent Bed Bugs?

When you’re in public or traveling:

  • Never set your personal items on the floor or ground.

  • Alert hotel maintenance if you notice bed bugs in your unit. Get a new room, as far away as possible.

  • Use a plastic bag or protective cover for your luggage.

  • Upon returning home, wash your clothes in hot water, then use high heat for drying.

If you’re at home:

  • Take a flashlight and examine box springs, mattress seams, and headboards and footboards. Don’t forget to go underneath the bed.

  • Look over bags and purses, laundry, drawer interiors, and furniture.

  • Scope out secondhand furniture, appliances, electronics, and other objects for signs of infestation before using them.
